Which solves your problem
| If your issue is | Choose |
|---|---|
| Hairs that will not stay in place | Lamination |
| Downward-growing hair | Lamination |
| Needing brow gel every morning | Lamination |
| Genuine gaps with no hair | Microblading |
| Very sparse brows overall | Microblading |
| Wanting to skip brow makeup for years | Microblading |
| Wanting to try a fuller look first | Lamination - it grows out |
Lamination is the low-commitment option, and that makes it a reasonable way to see whether you like a fuller brow before considering anything permanent.
The commitment difference
This is the part worth thinking about hardest. Lamination that you dislike is gone in six to eight weeks with no intervention. Microblading you dislike is a removal process that costs more than the original and takes months.
| If you regret it | Lamination | Microblading |
|---|---|---|
| Time to resolve | 6 - 8 weeks | Months |
| Cost to resolve | Nothing | $600 - 3,000 |
| Guaranteed to resolve | Yes | No - residue is common |
| Action needed | None | Laser or saline sessions |
Can you have both?
Yes, and some people do — microblading fills gaps while lamination directs the real hair growing through it. Space them apart and tell each technician what else you have had done.
- Do not laminate during microblading healing — wait until it has fully settled, generally at least six to eight weeks after the touch-up.
- Tell your lamination technician about the pigment work.
- Tell your PMU artist that you laminate, since it affects how they see your natural brow shape.
The regulatory difference matters too
This rarely enters the decision, but it explains why the two services are offered in different places and why the questions you ask should differ.
| Brow lamination | Microblading | |
|---|---|---|
| Breaks the skin | No | Yes |
| Typically regulated by | Cosmetology or esthetics board | Often a health department under body art rules |
| Usual credential | Esthetics or cosmetology licence | Body art registration, often plus training hours |
| Facility rules | Salon or establishment licence | Body art facility registration and inspection |
| Key question to ask | Is a patch test done? | Are you registered for body art here? |
Requirements vary by state in both cases, and a certificate from a course does not settle either one. The board or health department does.
What each costs over three years
| Three-year total | |
|---|---|
| Lamination every 8 weeks with tint | approx. $1,365 - 2,925 |
| Lamination every 8 weeks, no tint | approx. $975 - 2,145 |
| Microblading plus two colour boosts | approx. $700 - 2,000 |
Using one to test the other
If you are drawn to microblading but unsure about the commitment, lamination is a low-cost way to see whether the fuller brow suits your face.
| Step | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Laminate once | Whether you like a fuller, brushed-up brow |
| Live with it for 6 weeks | Whether it suits your daily look |
| Add a tint | Whether you want more depth of colour |
| Let it grow out | Whether you missed it |
| Then decide | With actual information rather than a mockup |
Around $70 to $150 and eight weeks buys real information about a decision that otherwise costs several hundred dollars and lasts years.
The short version
Lamination reshapes hair you already have for six to eight weeks. Microblading places pigment in skin for one to three years. Hair that misbehaves points to the first; gaps with no hair point to the second.
If you are undecided, start with lamination. It grows out on its own at no cost, which makes it the cheapest way to find out whether a fuller brow is what you actually wanted.
Frequently asked questions
Q.Which is better?
Neither. Lamination reshapes hair you have; microblading adds pigment where hair is missing. They solve different problems.
Q.Which lasts longer?
Microblading, by a large margin — one to three years against six to eight weeks.
Q.Which is cheaper?
Lamination per session, but the annual cost is comparable once microblading is only being maintained.
Q.Can I have both?
Yes, spaced apart. Do not laminate while microblading is still healing.
Q.Which should I try first?
Lamination, if you are unsure. It grows out on its own, so there is nothing to undo.
